Blog Tour: Hunter’s Chase by Val Penny {Review}

I hope you’re all enjoying the lovely warm weather we’re having. It’s perfect for sitting out and reading, which is something I’ve been trying to do as much as possible.

Today I have a review of Hunter’s Chase, the debut novel by Val Penny.

Hunter by name – Hunter by nature: DI Hunter Wilson will not rest until Edinburgh is safe.

DI Hunter Wilson knows there is a new supply of cocaine flooding his city and he needs to find the source but his attention is transferred to murder when a corpse is discovered in the grounds of a golf course.

Shortly after the post-mortem, Hunter witnesses a second murder but that is not the end of the slaughter.

With a young woman’s life also hanging in the balance, the last thing Hunter needs is a new man on his team: the son of his nemesis, the former Chief Constable.

Hunter’s perseverance and patience are put to the test time after time in this taught crime thriller.

It’s been a while since I have read a good old British police procedural so when the opportunity arose to take part in the blog tour for this book I didn’t hesitate. Hunter’s Chase is the first in a new series called The Edinburgh Crime Mysteries, and is the debut novel by author by Val Penny.

I found the main character, DI Hunter Wilson, to be extremely likeable, as was the new recruit to his team, Tim Myerscough. Unfortunately, Tim is also the son of Hunter’s old nemesis and former chief constable, which causes a few waves. However, he is also totally different from this father and, as the investigations progress, the two men become to warm to each other.

Watching the relationship between Hunter and Tim, along with all the other members of the team made for interesting reading, although I have to admit that I did get confused once or twice with some of the characters and their relationships.

There were enough twists to the crimes to keep you trying to work out who was to blame and I did change my mind a couple of times while reading. I also found myself rooting for one of the characters, although I’m not going to go into further detail for fear of spoilers.

Overall this book is engaging and will keep you hooked until the final page. There are plenty of likeable characters, along with some not so likeable ones and a wonderfully written plot. It found it the perfect mix and am now eagerly awaiting the next book in the series – roll on September!

Many thanks to Rachel  and Val for the opportunity to be part of the blog tour.
